Chapter Twelve

Warren headed down to the faded faux grandeur of the main sitting room of the hotel that overlooked Tintagel Castle. Ornate archways and florid paintings gave way to a grouping of couches and tables in front of a large fireplace. Ignoring the table where his co-workers sat in various states of impatience, he planted himself on a couch near the fire and brooded.

It had taken every inch of his self-control to walk away from Morgan. Never in a hundred years had he expected her to look at him the way she had moments ago.

Hungry.

Pliant.

Wide open.

After false starts and downright rebuffs, she had wanted him—on some level.

He looked down at his hands, almost surprised the contact with her had not marked him somehow. Had he made the right decision based on the fragility of her current state?

Or had he missed a supreme opportunity to discover the truth?

But I already leaned pretty hard in Hawaii. How can I do that again when she's not feeling well?

After a moment, he sensed a presence next to him on the couch.

When he could trust himself to speak, he turned toward Pinky. “Tell me again why I have to pull back.”

She dipped her head, further bathing her face in the shadow of her over-sized crocheted hat. “The energy is all off.”

He snorted. “I thought that was the whole point.”

“There has to be some semblance of control. This needs to be handled with kid gloves, as you know.”

“I thought I was being careful.”

“You're getting in over your head.”

“I can't get in at all with you nipping at my heels.”

Pinky's jaw hardened. “Just remember you're here at my bidding.”

“I'm starting to see why you couldn't handle this on your own.”

Warren stood and headed for the door. He caught Hunter's curious gaze before exiting the hotel and allowing the Cornish air to cool his overheated blood.
